-
- The first newspaper in
Abernathy was called the Abernathy Two- County News. There was
no editor listed in the paper at this time, but Webster and Hardin
were shown as the managers. The subscription rate was $1 per
year. The paper was established March 29, 1912, and was published
by Abernathy Publishing Company.
-
- It is not known what happened
to the Two-County News, but it passed on, and another paper replaced
it.
-
- The next paper was published
and edited by Rob E. Downy, and was called the Abernathy Breeze.
It was established April 19, 1912.
-
- S.J. Redman was publisher
and editor of the Abernathy Weekly Review when it was established.
The first issue was November 17, 1921. Subscription rates were
$1 per year. Stockton Henry purchased the paper from Mr. Redman.
W.A. Richter became editor. Redman returned to editorship, then
J.J. Riley became editor.
-
- J.C. Hurst purchased the
Abernathy Weekly Review from Mr. Henry in the 1920's. At
that time, small town journalists used a linotype machine to
run the paper. The newspaper press was hand fed and if you missed
putting in a sheet, the back-up cover would be printed and become
spoiled with ink. The next clean sheet would be smeared on the
wrong side.
-
- Charles Hurst was editor
for awhile and the editorship was taken over by Vic Lamb. Charles
Hurst was an engineer and was largely responsible for getting
the data together that caused the TUCO plant to be located at
Abernathy.
-
- Mr. Lamb was editor from
1932 to 1935. Buford Davenport became the editor of the Review.
Buford quit the Review for a short time in 1945. After purchasing
the paper in 1946, Buford remained editor until 1975.
-
- Richard and Vicki Havens
took over the editorship and continued to edit and publish the
Review until 1981.
-
- On January 1, 1981, Keith
Tooley became editor. In 1984, Linda Salitros was editor, replacing
Mr. Tooley.
-
- Angela Pope and Jackie
Smyers later took over the Review and were running it in 1986.
-
- Scott and Judy Luce purchased
the Review in 1989 and ran it until 2007 when it closed.
-
- In 2007, shortly after
the Abernathy Weekly Review closed, Eugene Bonds established
a new paper and named it the Abernathy Star.
