- People's
Ice Company
-
- The ice house was considered
a necessity for the folks who had an ice box. Blocks, or half
blocks of ice could be purchased.
-
- The original little ice
house was replaced in 1938. The new ice house was built on the
site of the old and smaller building. At a height of eighteen
feet, the brick building, with sides 23 feet wide, had a capacity
of 120 three hundred pound blocks, or 36,000 pounds. The vault
was equipped with a vending machine. A dock on the front (west)
and an office in the south portion of the building completed
the new building.
- Not only could a person
get blocks of ice, but later could get sacks of crushed ice.
-
- Like so many other things,
time took its toll on the facility and the building was torn
down about 1960.
