- Post Office
-
- The first area settlers
were able to receive their mail at the post office of Clisbee,
which was established on August 3, 1891, at the Clisbee Stage
Stand.
-
- Later, this post office
was moved a few miles and then was discontinued September 11,
1894. The Clisbee Post Office was re-established in 1900. This
time it was located two miles north of the Lubbock County line,
five miles east of the present town of Abernathy. The Clisbee
Post Office was discontinued in 1901.
-
- Clisbee never became a
town or community center, but served the people only as a post
office. The Strip Post Office was established on April I5, 1904,
at the home of Jerry M. Turner. When the town of Abernathy was
started five miles west of Strip, the Strip Post Office served
the town until January 13, 1910. Joe St. Clair was the Postmaster
at Strip at that time.
-
- The Abernathy Post Office
was opened January 13, 1910, with James M. Anderson appointed
postmaster as of that date. Many locations of the local post
office have been noted.
-
- A new post office building
was built on the City Square in 1964 just south of the City Hall.
