Going Green

The City of Abernathy is taking advantage of federal funds to save taxpayers money.

As of August 3rd, 2010, Abernathy was able to upgrade multiple systems inside City Hall by using funding provided by the State Energy Conservation Office.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has provided the State Energy Conservation Office (or SECO) with $290 million to disperse throughout Texas towns.

$23,030 was granted to Abernathy, which was used to purchase two wind turbines, several automated thermostats, and automated lights for some rooms.

Improvements made include:

  • install two Raum 3.5KW wind generators (purchased from Imperial Electric, Inc).
  • Install 8 programmable thermostats.
  • Install 5 occupancy detector wall switches
  • Install 7 timer wall switches.

The thermostats will automate the heating and cooling systems in a effort to reduce associated gas and electrical costs.

The turbines, which will be used to directly feed energy into City Hall, can generate up to around 7 Kilowatts/ hour of wind powered energy.

The energy produced by the wind generatorswill be 100% consumed within City Hall.

Anticipated annual savings total $4,950 which represents a 4 1/2 year return on the investment.

Below are pictures of the installation of the new generators at City Hall.
