- The City of Abernathy provides
several areas for the disposal of your unwanted items.
-
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Dumpsters
-
- Dumpsters are for use of household garbage
only. Areas around the dumpster should be kept clean and free
of larger trash items and weeds.
-
- The city contracts for alley collection.
The dumpster in your alley is for city residents only. The contract
price city residents pay for this service is directly affected
by the amount hauled.
-
- The City of Abernathy will aggressively
prosecute unauthorized users of this service. Illegal dumping
is a Class C Misdemeanor and is punishable with a fine of up
to $500. Illegal dumping costs you money.
-
- If you see someone you suspect is dumping
illegally, you are encouraged to note the license tag number
and then call and report the illegal dumping as soon as possible.
-
- Grass Clippings
-
- It is acceptable to place grass clippings
inside your dumpster, if they are bagged. Because grass clippings
contain and hold moisture, clippings that are not bagged will
rot the bottom of the container. Dumpster maintenance is passed
on to the city by the contractor through higher contract prices
for the service.
-
- If you place your clippings on the ground,
please spread the clippings so they can compost naturally. Do
not place grass clippings on the ground in piles. Grass clippings
will hold moisture creating ruts and making alley surfaces worse.
-
- Tree Branches
-
- The city provides a place where residents
may stack branches for mulching with a diameter of ten (10) inches
or less. The mulching of branches is at no cost to city residents.
Mulch is also available free of charge for anyone at that location.
-
- The use of mulch in flowerbeds will aid
in weed control and reduce evaporation of water; thus saving
watering costs for the resident.
-
- Roll-off Bins
-
- Roll-off bins are available to residents
for the disposal of furniture, mattresses, carpet, and other
large household items. There is generally no cost for using the
roll-off bins for typical domestic waste items. There is a charge
however for construction and remodeling items.
-
- Used Tires
-
- The city now has a recycling center for
used tires. All commercial generators should contact City Hall
before bringing tires to the Collection Center.
-
- All tires must be off of the rims before
they will be accepted.
-
-
- White Goods
-
- If you have old washing machines, dryers,
water heaters, and other recyclable metals, the city provides
a collection point for these items at no charge. Note: Refrigerators
and air conditioners must have freon evacuated and be properly
labeled by licensed person before we will accept them.
-
- Recyclables
-
- A recycle center located at 807 6th Street
for recyclable plastics, paper, card board, and aluminum.
-
- Free Hauling
-
- The city has trucks and trailers available
to residents for the hauling of the above listed items at no
charge. Upon request, we will bring a truck or trailer to your
house. Call us when it is full, we will haul it off for you.
To schedule the use of a truck or trailer, call City Hall or
Maintenance Barn.
-
- Burned Waste
-
- Because TCEQ regulations at the landfill
require burned waste to be stored in separate areas, and since
burning of waste is not allowed in the City of Abernathy and
the city will not accept burned waste.
-
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- For more information on any of
these services, call City Hall at (806) 298-2546.

- Policy For Keeping
Alleys
-
- Alleys should be kept clean.
-
- Your alley is a public area designed for
the city and other providers to access your property with services.
It is not an area that should be used for the storage of vehicles,
building materials, or other items. Items placed in your alley
in such a way to hamper access to service personnel are subject
to immediate removal at your cost.
-
- Mowing
-
- The mowing of weeds and grass in the alley
is the responsibility of the property owner or resident. For
fire prevention, the weeds shall be kept to no higher than 6
inches. This will also help keep rodents and insects (mosquitoes)
under control, and will assist your city employees and other
public service workers in gaining access to meters located in
the alleys.
-
- Health
-
- With the emergence of West Nile Virus,
your alley should be kept free of items that collect water, especially
tires. It takes a combined effort of the City and the citizenry
in this fight.
- Waste food, grease, and other items that
host and grow bacteria should be bagged and placed inside the
dumpster.
-
- Remember, kids don't always know that
these misplaced items can be fatal.
